FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Information used to control patent documents. In addition to information about patents, this field may contain information relating to inventors' certificates, utility certificates, utility models, patents or certificates of addition, inventors' certificates of addition, utility certificates of addition, and published applications for any of these.

Patent documents are assigned numbers and dates relative to the process of applying for and being granted legal rights to benefit from an invention or discovery. This field also includes information identifying the status of the patent document and country of source.

Field is repeated when more than one number is associated with a patent document.

INDICATORS

SUBFIELD CODES

$a - Number
Patent document number, i.e., the number assigned by a competent authority (typically a patent office). The number is recorded according to Recording, Use, and Display of Patent Application Data (ANSI Z39.61). The number is recorded in a YY-AANNNNN pattern where YY represents the last two digits of the calendar year, AA represents letters (when required), and NNNNN represents the variable-length numeric portion of the application number.
For application numbers containing the year or a part thereof as an integral part of the number, the last two digits of the year are taken from the application number itself. For application numbers that do not contain the year, the last two digits of the year are taken from the application date. For application numbers that use the Japanese year of the emperor, the year of the emperor is converted to the Gregorian calendar. Note: An additional two positions may be added to record the complete calendar year where confusion may arise from omission of the century.

$b - Country
Code representing the country or jurisdiction associated with the patent document. Code from: MARC Code List for Countries.
When an entity other than a country is associated with the patent document, the code is recorded in subfield $f (Party to document). The country in which the patent document was published or produced is represented in coded form in field 008 (Fixed-Length Data Elements), positions 15-17 (Country code). This is not always the country as coded in field 013 $b. If the same patent document number has been used in more than one country, field 013 must be repeated for each.

The source of the code is Standard Code for Identification of Different Kinds of Patent Documents (WIPO ST.16) that is maintained by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The code is a one- or two-character code. Plain language terms are recorded as they appear on the item. Field 013 is repeated if there is more than one number to be recorded for an item.

Date is usually assigned by a competent authority (typically a patent office). The date of an application is typically the date of receipt by the agency. Other dates, such as effective dates, exhibitions dates, etc. are also recorded in this subfield. Multiple dates are recorded in separate occurrences of subfield $d if they all relate to the same patent document. Qualifying information is recorded in subfield $e. The date is recorded according to Data elements and interchange formats-Information interchange-Representation of dates and times (ISO 8601).
