Either a complete National Library of Medicine (NLM) call number or classification number assigned by either the National Library of Medicine or by other agencies using the National Library of Medicine Classification. The second indicator values distinguish between content actually assigned by the National Library of Medicine and content assigned by an organization other than NLM.
Classification or call number is taken from National Library of Medicine Classification schedules QS-QZ and W or from Library of Congress Classification schedules as used by NLM for peripheral and related topics.
It is NLM practice to assign accession numbers to print monographs that receive limited cataloging, and since January 1994 to most print monographs receiving full-level cataloging.

NLM uses the Cutter-Sanborn Three-Figure Author Table to create item numbers and a special numbering scheme in classes W1 and W3 to create item numbers.
Special scheme of numbering used in classes W1 and W3 is described in the National Library of Medicine Classification. This subfield may also contain a copy number.

In the serials specifications, the use of the second indicator position to indicate the type of series was made obsolete in 1976. The values were: 0 (No series involved), 1 (Main series), 2 (Subseries), 3 (Sub-subseries).
Second indicator was defined in 1982. Prior to that change, 060 was an agency-assigned field and contained only call numbers assigned by the National Library of Medicine. NLM records created before the definition of this indicator may contain a blank (#) meaning undefined in the second indicator position.
Prior to January 1994, subfield $a was repeated to record alternative call numbers. Beginning in 1994, alternative call numbers should be recorded in separate occurrences of field 060.
