Either a complete National Library of Medicine (NLM) call number or classification number assigned by either the National Library of Medicine or by other agencies using the National Library of Medicine Classification. The second indicator values distinguish between content actually assigned by the National Library of Medicine and content assigned by an organization other than NLM.
Classification or call number is taken from National Library of Medicine Classification schedules QS-QZ and W or from Library of Congress Classification schedules as used by NLM for peripheral and related topics.
It is NLM practice to assign accession numbers to print monographs that receive limited cataloging, and since January 1994 to most print monographs receiving full-level cataloging.
First Indicator - Existence in NLM collection
Whether or not the item is contained in the NLM collection.
Used for call numbers assigned by an organization other than NLM.
060 | #4$aW1$bJO706M |
Item is not in the NLM collection, or it is not shelved under that number.

Second Indicator - Source of call number
Whether the source of the call number is the National Library of Medicine or another agency.
$a - Classification number
Either the classification number portion of the call number or an accession number. Source of the classification number is National Library of Medicine Classification.

060 | 00$aZ 675.M4$bH477 |
Current practice is to record alternative call numbers in separate occurrences of field 060.

In older records, subfield $a was repeated when alternate call numbers were recorded. In this case, the alternate class number was recorded following the last subfield of the call number. If the alternate class number also included an item number, the item number was included in the same subfield $a as the alternate class number; it was not separately subfielded.

$b - Item number
Item number portion of the NLM call number.
NLM uses the Cutter-Sanborn Three-Figure Author Table to create item numbers and a special numbering scheme in classes W1 and W3 to create item numbers.
Special scheme of numbering used in classes W1 and W3 is described in the National Library of Medicine Classification. This subfield may also contain a copy number.
060 | 00$aW1$bRI217 |
Accession numbers do not contain a separate item portion, thus subfield $b is not used. The alternative numbers assigned to items receiving less-than-full cataloging also lack an item number.

060 | 10$aQV 350 |
$0 - Authority record control number or standard number
See description of this subfield in Appendix A: Control Subfields.
$1 - Real World Object URI
See description of this subfield in Appendix A: Control Subfields.
$8 - Field link and sequence number
See description of this subfield in Appendix A: Control Subfields.
Punctuation - Field 060 does not end with a period unless the period is part of the data in the final subfield.
Spacing - Spaces that are desired in the call number must be input.
Display Constants
[DNLM: ... ] |
/ | [space-slash-space] |
Display constant DNLM: and the Arabic numeral that precede an NLM call number, and the brackets that surround the entire statement are not carried in the MARC record. They may be system generated as a display constant associated with the field tag.
Space-slash-space that is used to separate alternate NLM call numbers when they are recorded in the same field (applies to older records) is not carried in the machine-readable record. It may be system generated as a display constant associated with the presence of repeated $a subfields.

1. [DNLM: W1 BE 357 Bd. 1 1973 / WW 166 M43k 1973] |
In the serials specifications, the use of the second indicator position to indicate the type of series was made obsolete in 1976. The values were: 0 (No series involved), 1 (Main series), 2 (Subseries), 3 (Sub-subseries).
Second indicator was defined in 1982. Prior to that change, 060 was an agency-assigned field and contained only call numbers assigned by the National Library of Medicine. NLM records created before the definition of this indicator may contain a blank (#) meaning undefined in the second indicator position.
Prior to January 1994, subfield $a was repeated to record alternative call numbers. Beginning in 1994, alternative call numbers should be recorded in separate occurrences of field 060.
