FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Used in the United States to support retrospective conversion of Pre-AACR 2 cataloging records. It was made obsolete in CAN/MARC in 1988. This field contains an author/title series statement in which the author portion is a personal name or a pronoun representing it that refers back to a 100 field. Field 400 is both a series statement and a series added entry. When a 400 field is present, a corresponding 800 field is not used since it would duplicate the 400 field.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING CONTENT DESIGNATORS

Description of the first indicator position and all subfield codes are given in the X00 Personal Names-General Information section. The second indicator is described below.

INDICATORS

Second Indicator - Pronoun represents main entry
Whether or not a pronoun is used to represent the series main entry heading.
0 - Main entry not represented by pronoun
Author portion of the series statement is not represented by a possessive pronoun that refers to the name in the 1XX field.
1 - Main entry represented by pronoun
Author portion of the series statement is represented by a possessive pronoun that refers to a name in the 1XX field. When this value is used, the first indicator of field 4XX is set based on the type of name in the 1XX field. With this indicator value, an added entry for the series from this field substitutes the heading in the 1XX field for the pronoun.
