FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

These 9XX fields were developed by the Library and Archives Canada and included in their records created and distributed since 1975. In Canada, the 9XX fields serve as a fundamental support for cataloging in both English and French, reflecting the bilingual character of Canada. In MARC 21, the 9XX fields are reserved for local use following the principles for the development of the format. The inclusion of the 9XX fields in this appendix does not preclude the continued use of these fields as locally defined fields in non-Canadian systems.

The 9XX fields indicated above contain information that provides bibliographic access and facilitates the generation of bibliographic products that are required in bilingual cataloging environments. They may also contain information that may be used to create cross-references. A separate field 990 links the corresponding fields that are to be used to produce particular output products.

Equivalences
Equivalences are given in these 9XX fields only for names and uniform titles that function as main or added entries in a bibliographic record and only if there is an official form of name or title in more than one language.Equivalences for subject headings appear in the appropriate 6XX field (Subject Access Entry) Differentiation of subject headings is made by the identification of the thesaurus from which a term is taken, which is identified either by an indicator value or thesaurus code in subfield $2 (Source).

Cross-references
Cross-references can be provided for any main entry field (100-130), series fields (440, 800-830), or added entry fields (700-730). Reference instruction terms or phrases, such as the term see, are not part of the data in a 9XX field that contains a cross-reference. They may be machine generated based on the value of the field tag.

Field structure
Structure of the 9XX fields (except field 990) is the same as the corresponding main and added entry fields (1XX, 7XX), and series fields (440, 8XX). Field 990 serves to link the other 9XX fields to their corresponding fields. The table below lists the standard format fields that correspond to the 9XX fields. The content designation for each 9XX field is the same as that described for each corresponding field, e.g., field 100, field 730, etc. The 9XX name fields may also carry, in subfield $t, uniform and collective title information corresponding to field 240 and field 243 data.

9XX Corresponding Fields
9XX Field Corresponding field(s)
900 100, 700 (Personal Name)
910 110, 710 (Corporate Name)

LINK TO EQUIVALENCES OR CROSS-REFERENCES

Field 990 (Link to Equivalences or Cross-References) links equivalent and reference fields to their corresponding access fields. Each occurrence of field 990 links a separate equivalence or reference.

Specifications for Field 990:

First Indicator - Type of link
0 - Equivalence
1 - Cross-reference
Second Indicator - Language of catalog
0 - English
1 - French

Subfield Codes

$a - Link information for 9XX fields
$b - Link information for field corresponding to 9XX field

Subfield $a and $b are used to record the level numbers assigned according to the occurrence within each record of fields which have the same tag value. A new level number sequence begins with each distinct tag value. The data in subfield $a and $b is structured as follows:

[linking tag][level number][alphabetic subfield identifier]

Tag Level Contents of field
700 01 1#$aBignell, Sharon.
700 02 1#$aVinson, Richard.
710 01 2#$aParkland Regional Arts Committee.
710 02 2#$aKnow Your Neighbour (Project) Stoney Plain, Alta.
900 01 1#$aVinson, Richard W.
910 01 2#$aOpportunities for Youth (Federal aid programme) Stoney Plain, Alta.
990 [Empty] 10$a90001a$b70002a
990 [Empty] 10$a91001a$b71002a

Multiple subfields $a and $b may occur in one field 990 when concatenated by an "and" condition, e.g., subfield $b can repeat to accommodate name title combinations.
