Field 583 (Actions Note) in the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data was defined for recording information about processing and actions taken on bibliographic material, usually material under archival control. The following lists of standard terminology were prepared by the Preservation of Library Materials Section of the Resources and Technical Services, Division of the American Library Association. These lists have been in use since being issued in 1988. Although not currently part of the MARC 21 format documentation, the terms in these lists are recommended, especially for cataloging conforming to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, 1988 revision.
The standard terminology should be used in field 583 to record preservation activities relating to an item. More than one term may be used in a string within each subfield.

A separate occurrence of field 583 is used for each action taken, however, existing occurrences of field 583 may be deleted from a record for actions that have been completed according to local preference. Information considered worth retaining in the record may be moved to subfield $x (Nonpublic note) or subfield $z (Public note).
Subfield $a refers to any action taken with respect an item. For preservation activities, this subfield contains a description of the action. Refer to the MARC 21 description for an example of this subfield.

Subfield $l contains the condition or state of the described materials, sometimes but not always resulting from an action. For preservation activities, this subfield contains information about the condition of the item when the action is Condition reviewed. This subfield may also contain information about the status of the item that caused preservation to be rejected (i.e., action is Preservation rejected) or information about the disposition of the original item. Refer to the MARC 21 description for an example of this subfield.
