FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE
Geographic classification code that represents the geographic area andany applicable
subareas associated with the community information entity. The code can provide more
precise geographic access than the codes contained in field 043 (Geographic Area Code).
Geographic area information may be described textually in field 522 (Geographic Area
Note).
Each main geographic area code and any related subarea codes associated with the entity
are contained in a separate 052 field. Subfield $d (Populated Place Name) may
contain the name of the geographic area.
GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING CONTENT DESIGNATORS
■ INDICATORS
First Indicator - Code source Value that indicates the source of the code in subfield $a and
information in the other subfields.
# - Library of Congress Classification Geographic classification code is derived from the Library of Congress
Classification-Class G and expanded Cutter number lists for place
names. Cutter numbers for place names in the United States are also published
in Geographic Cutters. The Library of Congress maintains the
Library of Congress Classification, Geographic Cutters, and the
Cutter number lists.
1 - U.S. Dept. of Defense Classification Geographic classification code is from the U.S. Department of Defense
Classification system.
7 - Source specified in subfield $2 Geographic classification code is taken from a source other than that specified
by one of the other defined indicator values and for which an identifying code
is given in subfield$2.
Second Indicator - Undefined Undefined and contains a blank (#).

$a - Geographic classification area code Four- to six-character numeric or alphanumeric code that represents the main
geographic area covered by an item. The code is derived from the Library of
Congress Classification-Class G schedule range G3190-G9980 by dropping the
letter G.

subfield $a, assigned from the Library of Congress-Class G or
the expanded Cutter number lists for place names. The Cutter lists are maintained
by the Library of Congress. Cutter numbers for places in the U.S. are published in
Geographic Cutters that is maintained by the Library of Congress.
Each geographic subarea code is contained in a separate subfield $b.
Subfield $b may be repeated for subareas falling within a main area
with the same code.

In the case of a name established by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, if a
short form of the name has been approved, that form is used in preference to the
full form of name.

Punctuation - The period that usually precedes a Cutter number is omitted in subfield $b.
Field 052 does not end with a period.
Capitalization - Alphabetic characters are recorded in uppercase.
