Variant forms of names recorded in 1XX (Primary Names), 6XX (Subject Entries,) and 7XX (Added Entries) are not recorded in this field. Access to these variants is usually provided in MARC authority record 4XX (See From Tracing) fields.
When displayed/printed as a note, varying forms of titles are in some instances preceded by an introductory term or phrase that is generated as a display constant based on the second indicator value.

Second Indicator - Type of title
Value that specifies the type of title recorded in field 246 and controls the generation of a note. It is also used in some instances to generate a display constant that precedes a title when a note is created from the field. (See Input Conventions.)

Punctuation - Field 246 does not end with a mark of punctuation unless the last word in the field is an abbreviation, initial/letter, or data that ends with a mark of punctuation.
Initial Articles - Initial articles (e.g., The, La) are generally not recorded in field 246 unless the intent is to file on the article.
Multiple Fields - Order of input of multiple 246 fields is customarily determined by the value in the second indicator position. Multiple Varying Form of Title fields are recorded in order of the numeric value in the second indicator position, i.e., 246 fields with second indicator value 0, 246 fields with second indicator value 1, etc.
