Geographic classification code that represents the geographic area andany applicable subareas associated with the community information entity. The code can provide more precise geographic access than the codes contained in field 043 (Geographic Area Code). Geographic area information may be described textually in field 522 (Geographic Area Note).

Subfield Codes
$a - Geographic classification area code (NR)
Four- to six-character numeric or alphanumeric code that represents the main geographic area covered by an item. The code is derived from the Library of Congress Classification-Class G schedule range G3190-G9980 by dropping the letter G.
$b - Geographic classification subarea code (R)
Alphanumeric code that represents a subarea of the geographic area coded in subfield $a, assigned from the Library of Congress-Class G or the expanded Cutter number lists for place names. The Cutter lists are maintained by the Library of Congress. Cutter numbers for places in the U.S. are published in Geographic Cutters that is maintained by the Library of Congress.
$d - Populated place name (R)
Approved form of name for a populated place.
$2 - Code source (NR)
