NAME: Change Subfield $v (Record Control Number) to $u in the USMARC Authority Format
SOURCE: Library of Congress
SUMMARY: This paper proposes changing the subfield code for Record control number in the linking entry fields of the USMARC Authority Format. Proposal No. 95-2 defined a subfield $v in the USMARC bibliographic, authority, classification and community information formats for form subdivision. The Established Heading Linking Entry fields (7XX) in the USMARC Authority format already had a subfield $v defined for Record control number.
KEYWORDS: Subfield $v, in 7XX fields (Authority); Subfield $u, in 7XX fields (Authority); Record Control Number (Authority); Field 7XX (Authority); Form Subdivisions
RELATED: 95-2 (Feb. 1995); 95-11 (June 1995)
STATUS/COMMENTS:

PROPOSAL NO. 95-15: Change Subfield $v (Record Control Number) to $u
1. BACKGROUND
Proposal No. 95-2 (Definition of Subfield $v for Form
Subdivision in the USMARC Formats) was discussed by the USMARC
Advisory Group at ALA Midwinter in February 1995. The MARBI
Committee approved the proposal to define a subfield for form
subdivision using subfield code $v in numerous fields in the USMARC
bibliographic, authority, classification, and community information
formats. An oversight was made and the established
heading/subdivision heading linking entry fields in the USMARC
Authority format were not included in the list of fields requiring
subfield $v. The following linking entry fields exist in the 7XX
block in the USMARC Authority format:
700 Established Heading Linking Entry--Personal Name
710 Established Heading Linking Entry--Corporate Name
711 Established Heading Linking Entry--Meeting Name
730 Established Heading Linking Entry--Uniform Title
750 Established Heading Linking Entry--Topical Term
751 Established Heading Linking Entry--Geographic Name
780 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--General Subdivision
781 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--Geographic Subdivision
782 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--Chronological
Subdivision
785 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--Form Subdivision
[new; defined with Proposal 95-2]
The 7XX linking entry fields in the USMARC Authority format
contain the same subfields as in the other authority heading
fields. In addition, a subfield $v exists in order to provide a
machine link to the record control number of the related authority
record. The 7XX fields were defined in the Authority format with
Proposal No. 92-18, which was approved by the USMARC Advisory Group
in June 1992. Although subfield $w is used in the linking entry
fields of the USMARC Bibliographic format for Record control
number, that subfield was not available in the authority format,
because it is used as the Control subfield, which controls the
generation of a reference display.
Because the 7XX linking entry fields were only recently
defined in the USMARC authority format, it is likely that they have
not been heavily used. Since the definition of a subfield for form
subdivision applied to so many fields in so many formats, it seems
preferable to retain the coding consistency in the 7XX linking
entry fields with the other fields where the form subdivision
applies, rather than use a different subfield. Thus, this proposal
suggests changing the Record control number subfield code, rather
than the form subdivision code. Alternatively, another subfield
code could be chosen for form subdivision, since systems will only
begin to implement it now that it has been approved. However, the
only subfield code available in all the applicable fields in the
bibliographic, authority, classification, and community information
formats is subfield $j. The other subfield codes for subdivisions
are $x, $y, and $z, which are alphabetically far away from $j.
2. PROPOSED CHANGES
The following is presented for consideration:
- In linking entry 7XX fields in the USMARC Authority
format, change Record control number to subfield $u
- In linking entry 7XX fields in the USMARC Authority
format, define subfield $v for Form subdivision
The change is applicable to the following fields:
700 Established Heading Linking Entry--Personal Name
710 Established Heading Linking Entry--Corporate Name
711 Established Heading Linking Entry--Meeting Name
730 Established Heading Linking Entry--Uniform Title
750 Established Heading Linking Entry--Topical Term
751 Established Heading Linking Entry--Geographic Name
780 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--General
Subdivision
781 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--Geographic
Subdivision
782 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--Chronological
Subdivision
785 Subdivision Heading Linking Entry--Form Subdivision
See Attachment A for an example of a description of one of the
linking entry fields if this proposal is approved.
