Bibles and Other Sacred Writings - National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS)

This page includes Bibles and sacred texts of many world religions in a variety of languages and versions. Commentaries, concordances, liturgies, prayer books, hymnals, and magazines are also listed. These materials are available in audio, braille, digital text, and large print. Prices are not provided as they change frequently. Additional information is available from the listed suppliers.

The page has four sections: Scope Notes, Materials in the NLS Collection, Sources of Special Format Materials, and Indexes. The first section, Scope Notes, describes religious texts from many faiths and traditions, including various versions of the Bible.

The second section presents braille and talking books available through the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress. This free service is available through a network of cooperating libraries to residents of the United States, or American citizens living abroad, who have a visual impairment or physical disability that prevents them from reading regular print or using printed materials. Descriptions of religious texts from a variety of faiths and traditions.

Buddhism

Bardo Thodol: Also known as the Tibetan Book of the Dead; a Tibetan Buddhist scriptural work.
The Dhammapada: The collected sayings of the Buddha.
Diamond Sutra: Buddhist text.

Christianity

The Book of Mormon: A sacred text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Douay-Rheims: A translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible into English for the Catholic Church, 1582.
Goodspeed: First complete English-language translation from original sources of the Apocrypha by Edgar J. Goodspeed, 1923.
Jerusalem: First Catholic Bible translated from Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic into English by British scholars, 1966.
King James: King James or Authorized Version of the Bible, completed in 1611 by British scholars.
New American: Biblical translation by American scholars into modern English, sponsored by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (Roman Catholic). Earlier version called Confraternity was used from 1941 to 1969.
New International: A Protestant Bible sponsored by the New York Bible Society.
New Jerusalem: A Roman Catholic Bible that follows the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.
New King James: A 1962 updated edition of the 1611 King James version of the Bible. Uses contemporary language.
New Living Translation: A modern English translation of the Bible.
New Revised Standard: A 1989 updated edition of the Revised Standard Bible. Uses modern terminology.
Revised Standard: Protestant version of the Bible by American scholars, sponsored by the National Council of Churches and published in 1952.

Hinduism

Bhagavad-Gita: Sacred and popular religious scripture of Hinduism.
Kama Sutra: Ancient Indian text on human sexuality, written in the 2nd century.
Ramayana: Ancient epic poem (full title Srimad Valmiki Ramayana) that depicts the journey of Virtue to defeat Vice.
Rig Veda: Collection of hymns that contains the mythology of the Hindu gods and is the foundation of Hindu religion.
Upanishads: Collection of writings from oral traditions that form the core of Hindu philosophy.

Islam

Koran or Quran: Sacred book of Islam, which consists of 114 surahs, or chapters.

Judaism

Pentateuch: The books of Hebrew law (Torah); the five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Talmud: Rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, philosophy, customs, and history. Consists of the Mishnah (rabbinic literature presenting oral traditions and commentary on Jewish material) and Gemara (rabbinic analysis of the Mishnah, including commentary).
