The Persian poet Rumi (Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī, 1207-1273) wrote the 25,000-verse poem in couplet form, Masnavi (The Spiritual Couplets), in the last years of his life. This manuscript was written in present-day Pakistan in the mid-19th century and is part of the Library's Persian Manuscripts Digitization Project.
The manuscript's poor condition necessitated full treatment to enable safe handling and adequate capture for digitization.
