Mitigate the Impact of Emergencies

Risk exposure can be reduced, but not eliminated. When risks are realized, the adverse impact can be mitigated by good planning and preparation, which enable an effective response.

Have a disaster plan. At a minimum:

  • Know how to take the immediate measures necessary for life safety
  • Keep a current list of emergency contact numbers
  • Identify specific responsibilities
  • Have basic emergency supplies ready
  • Be familiar with available disaster services (e.g., maintain a contract for disaster services)
  • Know what to do next / establish continuity of operations

Practice response procedures:

  • Conduct exercises
  • Educate yourself
  • Know what to do if collections get wet

The information compiled here cover general key concepts and represent the minimum considered good practice in libraries, archives, museums, and other collection-holding institutions. These recommendations may be superseded by specific institutional requirements or by the instructions of civil defense or other emergency responders.
