MARC 21 Concise Community Information: Location and Alternate Graphics Fields (8XX)

This is an ARCHIVED VERSION of the 2000 electronic edition of the MARC 21 Concise Formats. Please see www.loc.gov/marc/concise/ for the most up-to-date version of the electronic MARC 21 Concise Formats.

Only two fields, field 856 and 880, are defined in the 8XX block of the MARC 21 Format for Community Information. These fields are defined analogously to similar fields in the other MARC 21 formats to record information about the location of a community information resource and the presence of alternate graphic representations of information in the MARC record.

856 - ELECTRONIC LOCATION AND ACCESS (R)

The information required to locate an electronic community information entity. The information identifies the electronic location containing the item or from which it is available. It also contains information to retrieve the item by the access method identified in the first indicator position. The information contained in this field is sufficient to allow for the electronic transfer of a file, subscription to an electronic journal, or logon to an online resource.
Field 856 is repeated when the location elements vary (subfields $a, $b, $c, $u). It is also repeated whenever the electronic filename varies (subfield $f), except when a single intellectual item is divided into different parts for online storage or retrieval.

880 - ALTERNATE GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION (R)

The fully content-designated, nonroman representation of another field in the same record. Field 880 and the associated roman field both contain a subfield $6 (Linkage).
