MARC 21 Concise Classification: Control Fields (001-008)

Fields 001-008 contain the record number and other control and coded information that are used in processing MARC 21 classification records. Each control field is identified by a field tag in the Directory and contains either a single data element or a series of fixed-length data elements identified by relative character position. Control fields contain neither indicator positions nor subfield codes.

001 - CONTROL NUMBER (NR)

The control number assigned by the organization creating, using, or distributing the record.

003 - CONTROL NUMBER IDENTIFIER (NR)

The MARC code for the agency whose system control number is present in field 001 (Control Number). The source of the code is the MARC Code List for Organizations that is maintained by the Library of Congress. For Canadian organizations, the source of the code is Symbols and Interlibrary Loan Policies in Canada that is maintained by the National Library of Canada.

005 - DATE AND TIME OF LATEST TRANSACTION (NR)

Sixteen characters that indicate the date and time of the latest record transaction and serve as a version identifier for the record. They are recorded according to Representation of Dates and Times (ISO 8601). The date requires 8 numeric characters in the pattern yyyymmdd. The time requires 8 numeric characters in the in the pattern hhmmss.f, expressed in terms of the 24-hour (00-23) clock.

008 - FIXED-LENGTH DATA ELEMENTS (NR)

Fourteen character positions (00-13) that contain positionally-defined data elements that provide coded information about the record as a whole or about special aspects of the 1XX classification number or explanatory index term field. Each character position must contain either a defined code or a fill character ( | ).

Character Positions

• 00-05 Date entered on file
  The computer-generated, six-character numeric string that indicates the date the MARC 21 record was created. The date is recorded in the pattern yymmdd.
• 06 - Kind of record
  Indicates the source of the data in the 1XX field.
  • a - Schedule record
  • b - Table record
  • c - Index term record
• 07 - Type of number
  Indicates the type of number contained in field 153 (Classification Number).
  • a - Single number
  • b - Defined number span
  • c - Summary number span
  • n - Not applicable
• 08 - Classification validity
  Indicates the validity of the classification number contained in field 153.
  • a - Valid
  • b - First number of span invalid
  • c - Last number of span invalid
  • d - Completely invalid
  • e - Obsolete
  • n - Not applicable
• 09 - Standard or optional designation
  Indicates whether the classification number contained in field 153 is from the standard or optional part of the schedules or tables of the scheme identified in field 084 (Classification Scheme and Edition).
  • a - Standard
  • b - Optional
  • n - Not applicable
• 10 - Record update in process
  Indicates whether a change in any field in a record is being considered.
  • a - Record can be used
  • b - Record is being updated
• 11 - Level of establishment
  Indicates the extent to which the formulation of the classification number or index term contained in the 1XX field conforms to the scheme identified in field 084.
  • a - Fully established
  • c - Provisional
• 12 - Synthesized number indication
  Indicates whether field 153 contains a synthesized classification number or number span.
  • a - Not synthesized
  • b - Synthesized
  • n - Not applicable
• 13 - Display controller
  Indicates the type of display appropriate for the classification number or index term contained in the 1XX field.
  • a - Displayed in standard schedules or tables
  • b - Extended display
