MARC 21 Concise Classification:
Index Term Fields (70X-75X)
This is an ARCHIVED VERSION of the 2002 electronic
edition of the MARC 21 Concise Formats. Please see
www.loc.gov/marc/concise/ for the most up-to-date version of the electronic MARC 21 Concise Formats.
Fields 700-751 and 754 contain controlled subject access terms that provide
subject access and links to the classification number or number span in field
153 (Classification Number). These fields are patterned after the 600-651 and
654 subject added entry fields in the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data
and, except for the absence of bibliographic subfields $u (Affiliation),
$4 (Relator code) and $6 (Linkage), the defined indicators and subfield codes
are the same as those listed in the MARC
21 Concise Format for Bibliographic Data. Definitions for the additional
subfields defined for some of these fields in classification data records are
given this section. Reference to the appropriate bibliographic field where descriptions
may be found are given for other subfields. Field 753 (Index Term--Uncontrolled)
is a special-use classification data field whose subelements are described here.
