MARC 21 Concise Community Information:
Control Fields (001-008)

Fields 001-008 contain control numbers and other control and
coded information that are used in processing MARC records.
Each control field is identified by a field tag in the Directory
and contains either a single data element or a series of
fixed-length data elements identified by relative character
position. Control fields contain neither indicator positions nor
subfield codes.
Information for Translators and Other Users
Items highlighted in red indicate changes made
after the 2001 edition of the MARC 21 Concise Formats was published and
are included in the 2002 printed edition of the MARC 21 Concise Formats.
The control number assigned by the organization creating, using, or distributing
the record. The organization is identified by the MARC code contained in field
003 (Control Number Identifier).

Contains the MARC code for the agency whose system control number is present
in field 001 (Control Number). The source of the code is the MARC
Code List for Organizations that is maintained by the Library of Congress.
For Canadian organizations, the source of the code is Symbols
and Interlibrary Loan Policies in Canada that is maintained by the
National Library of Canada.

Sixteen characters that indicate the date and time of the latest record transaction
and serve as a version identifier for the record. They are recorded according
to Representation of Dates and Times (ISO 8601). The date requires
8 numeric characters in the pattern yyyymmdd. The time requires 8 numeric
characters in the pattern hhmmss.f, expressed
in terms of the 24-hour (00-23) clock.

Ten character positions (00-09) that contain positionally- defined, coded data
elements that describe accommodations provided for people with disabilities.
Each defined character position contains either a code or a fill character (|).
Code n (Not applicable), when it is defined for a data element, indicates that
the character position definition does not apply to the entity. Physical accommodations
information may be described textually in field 575 (Accommodations for the
Disabled Note).

- 00 - Category
- 01 - Stairway ramps
Indicates whether entrance and internal ramps are provided.
- b - Entrance and internal ramps
- c - Entrance ramp only--multiple floors
- d - Entrance ramp only--single floor
- 02 - Doors
Indicates whether the doors accommodate wheelchairs.
- a - No wide or offset-hinge doors
- b - Wide or offset-hinge doors
- 03 - Furniture, equipment, display racks
Indicates whether the furniture, equipment, and display racks accommodate
people with disabilities.
- a - Unaccessible furniture, equipment, display racks
- b - Accessible furniture, equipment, display racks
- c - No furniture, equipment, display racks
- 04 - Restrooms
Indicates whether the restrooms accommodate people with disabilities.
- a - No special restroom accommodations or grab bars
- b - Special restroom accommodations and grab bars
Special restroom accommodations include such things as wide stalls
and higher toilet seats.
- c - Special restroom accommodations only
- 05 - Elevators
Indicates whether the elevators accommodate people with disabilities.
- a - No special elevators or control buttons
Special elevators are those wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs.
- b - Special elevators and control buttons
- c - Special elevators only
- d - Special control buttons only
- 06 - Telephones
Indicates whether the telephones accommodate people with disabilities.
- a - No lowered telephones or handset amplifiers
- b - Lowered telephones and handset amplifiers
- c - Lowered telephones only
- d - Handset amplifiers only
- 07 - Flashing emergency lights
- a - No flashing emergency lights
- b - Flashing emergency lights
- 08 - Sign language
Indicates whether interpretive signing is provided.
- 09 - Subtitles and/or supertitles
- a - No subtitles or supertitles
- b - Subtitles and supertitles
- 10 - Parking
Indicates the availability of parking for the handicapped including vehicles
with special height requirements.
- a - No handicapped accessible parking available
- b - Handicapped accessible parking available with high clearance for
special vehicles
- c - Handicapped accessible parking available with low clearance only

Fifteen character positions (00-14) that contain positionally-defined, coded
data elements that provide information about the record as a whole or about
special aspects of the community information. Each character position must contain
either a defined code or a fill character ( | ). Code n (Not applicable), when
it is defined for a data element, indicates that the character position definition
does not apply.
Character Positions
- 00-05 - Date entered on file
The computer-generated, six-character numeric string that indicates the date
the MARC record was created. The date is recorded in the pattern yymmdd.
- 06 - Volunteer opportunities
Indicates whether opportunities for volunteers are available. This information
may be described textually in field 571 (Volunteers Note).
- a - No volunteer opportunities
- b - Volunteer opportunities
- 07 - Volunteers provided
Indicates whether the services of volunteers are provided. This information
may be described textually in field 571 (Volunteers Note).
- a - No volunteers provided
- 08 - Child care arrangements
Indicates whether child care is provided. This information may be described
textually in field 576 (Services Available Note).
- a - No child care arrangements
- b - Child care arrangements
- 09 - Speakers bureau
Indicates whether speakers are available. This information may be described
textually in field 576 (Services Available Note).
- 10 - Mutual support groups
Indicates whether meetings of informal groups to discuss specific concerns
are available. This information may be described textually in field 576 (Services
Available Note).
- a - No mutual support groups
- b - Mutual support groups
- 11 - Meeting rooms and facilities available
Indicates whether rooms or other facilities are available. This information
may be described textually in field 311 (Meeting Rooms and Facilities Available).
- a - No meeting rooms and facilities
- b - Meeting rooms and facilities
- 12-14 - Language
A three-character MARC code that indicates the language associated with the
entity. Code from: MARC Code List for
Languages. When more than one language is associated with the entity,
the 008/12-14 code and the other codes are contained in field 041 (Language
Code). Language information may be described textually in field 546 (Language
Note).
