MARC 21 Concise Classification:
Control Fields (001-008)

This is an ARCHIVED VERSION of the 2003 electronic edition of the MARC 21 Concise Formats. Please see www.loc.gov/marc/concise/ for the most up-to-date version of the electronic MARC 21 Concise Formats.

Fields 001-008 contain the record number and other control and coded information that are used in processing MARC 21 classification records. Each control field is identified by a field tag in the Directory and contains either a single data element or a series of fixed-length data elements identified by relative character position. Control fields contain neither indicator positions nor subfield codes.
