Appendix C - Minimal Level Record Examples
MARC 21 Bibliographic
October 2003
Examples of cataloging records that contain all of the MARC data elements required for minimal-level bibliographic records.
Minimal-level record requirements have been chosen to provide sufficient information to identify a bibliographic item and
generate a basic bibliographic description. Records may include more data elements than those identified by minimal-level
record requirements. Although the data is taken from actual bibliographic records, these records are included for illustrative
purposes only and are not usable for bibliographic purposes.
The creator of the bibliographic data is not specified in these sample records. Field 008/39 contains code d (Other sources),
and field 040, subfields $a and $c contain the phrase <organization code> instead of a valid MARC code. In addition, field 001 (Record Control Number) and field 003 (Record Number Identifier) contain
the phrases <control number> and <control number identifier>, respectively, indicating that the record is an example only. The system-generated portions of the Leader (LDR) are represented
by asterisks (*). The records also lack a system-generated Directory. Field 008 character positions have been segmented to
improve readability. Although the exact segmentation varies, the first two segments always contain positions 00-05 and 06-14.
The last segment always contains positions 35-39. Minimal-level records can be identified by code 7 in Leader/17 (Encoding
level).
The following examples are available:
This example can be identified as a minimal-level record for printed language material by code a in Leader/06, and as a monographic
item by code m in Leader/07. The record contains fields for the basic bibliographic information: field 100 (Main Entry Personal
Name), 245 (Title Statement), 260 (Publication, Distribution, etc. (Imprint)), and 300 (Physical Description).
