INPUT CONVENTIONS

These elements are required when needed to distinguish a person from another person with the same name, or a corporate body from another corporate body with the same name, or family from another with the same name.

Field 046 includes subfields allowing the recording of all the types of dates listed above. Note that Start period and End period is to be interpreted broadly: subfield $s start period is used to record period of activity (start) and date of establishment; subfield $t End period is used to record period of activity (end) and date of termination. They are also used to record dates relating to families.

In order for these dates to be machine-processed, it is suggested that the dates should be encoded in a standard structured way, using an ISO 8601 compliant format. A profile for use of ISO 8601, with extensions needed by the community, has been developed and adopted by the PREMIS Editorial Committee. Use of that profile is recommended. See http://www.loc.gov/standards/datetime and Appendix A of MARC Proposal No. 2009-01/1
