Joanneum Research

JOANNEUM RESEARCH is a non-profit governmental owned research company. Its Institute of Information Systems & Information Management http://www.joanneum.at/iis (IIS) is involved in a series of projects in the area of Cultural Heritage (MALVINE http://www.malvine.org, LEAF http://www.leaf-eu.org/, ONE-2, CIMI testbeds ...). We were also participants in the projects developing the CIP-A demonstrator (we did the EXPLAIN implementation) and the search components (bibliographic gateways) within the framework of the Enabling Services run by the Space Applications Institute of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.

Z39.50 based software produced at our site includes multi-site search servers with web interfaces and configurable OPAC targets interfacing SQL databases or text file based data repositories (e.g. a WAIS index). Comfortable graphical tools assist the configuration of these server modules. Both types of systems implement Z39.50 version 3. The OPAC targets are available in C, C++ or Java. The Java implemented search servers allow connecting new data sources via Z39.50 but are open to other protocols as well (e.g. HTTP).

Beside the above mentioned S&R systems we have developed IMDAS http://www.imdas.at, a software supporting the workflows in museums with regard to the documentation and archiving of objects. This product already exists in a multilingual version (English and German) and is being continuously developed in close cooperation with museum experts. The software design allows adding new languages in a very comfortable way provided the necessary translations are available. The internet presentation of data recorded with IMDAS is possible by the means of our OPAC software. Customers can individually decide about the public view on their data.

National Library of Australia

The National Library of Australia's Kinetica Service implemented in March 1999 uses LibriVision Web/Z39.50 gateway software and an AMICUS Z39.50 target to provide access to the Australian National Union Catalogue for resource discovery and shared cataloguing purposes. The Library hopes to work with the Librivision and AMICUS developers to enhance Kinetica in stages over the next few years to conform with the Union Catalogue Profile [Draft Internationally Registered Profile to be used with ISO 23950 (Z39.50 Information Retrieval Protocol) Extended Service for Update].

The National Library is the maintenance agency for the Union Catalogue Profile, http://www.nla.gov.au/ucp/.

Through its participation in ZEDWEB - the Distributed Z39.50 / Web Gateway Service Project - the Library confirmed the ongoing need, at least in the Australian environment, for a central national union catalogue. During 1998/99 the Library committed resources to assist in the development of the Bath Profile to address some of the interoperability issues that had been identified through the ZEDWEB project.

In late 1999 the Library acquired the Blue Angel Technologies suite of products as the basis for a metadata repository and search system. This system is being used as the platform for redevelopment of Images 1/ and the Register of Australian Archives and Manuscripts to enable them as Z39.50 targets. The (PictureAustralia service ) launched in September 2000 also uses the Blue Angel Technologies platform to support a Dublin Core-based metadata index held at the National Library which links to pictorial images held on the web sites of participating cultural agencies around Australia.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Providing a Z39.50 service to a consortium of several institutions. The server consists of a Z39.50 protocol converter which acts as target for clients and interacts with databases via db interface object handed to the target at initialisation. The entire system is written in Modula3 and provides a database system independent Z39.50 target.

The production system implements V3 and supports Init, Search, Present, Scan, Explain (to some extent) and the ES functions persistent query, Periodic query schedule and export specification. Have implemented servers for: experimental Z39.50 access to the online catalog on the main-frame; Z39.50 access to a UNIX based db system under development; Z39.50 access to Current Contents on the mainframe.

To facilitate further development, an ASN.1 analyzer was written which now succesfully parses the complete Z39.50 definitions. It generates modula-3 source code which, together with a suite of object definitions allows the encoding and decoding of all Z39.50 PDUs. The analyzer could be updated to generate other language source if required.

In addition a Z39.50 to Web gateway has been implemented and is now installed as a production service.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Global Patent Information project: large ASCII and raster image databases, relational databases for both text and classified searches of US and foreign patents. ASCII databases on mainframe and on a server including US full text patents and 'first page' abstracts of Japanese and European patents. In 1998 SQL relational databases will support classified search by both US and European classification systems and will be used for retrieval of Global Patent clipped and full images stored on the EMC2 system. The SQL (ORACLE) database will be a stand-alone system while 'AMICUS' (altered product of CGI Group) will be used primarily for splitting and routing Z39.50 queries to SQL and text domains, using BRS as a new text search engine. PTO had deployed two types of client in May 1997: (1) The WEB client was developed by CNIDR -- a standard Netscape browser HTTP queries through MSI (a Z39.50 gateway, product of CAS) to the mainframe. Messenger (product of CAS) is the mainframe text search engine. (2) The DLL client, developed by CGI Group and modified to the PTO's requirements, converts queries to the Z39.50 v3 protocol and targets both MSI/ mainframe databases and AMICUS databases. The DLL client was developed and deployed primarily for professional needs of the U.S.PTO corps of examiners, the WEB client for casual users. Both clients use Windows NT system for query and retrieval of clipped images.
