Cataloging access to the OCLC WorldCat database is available through the OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging service. The production server is at zcat.oclc.org:210, a test server is available at testenv.oclc.org:5666. A valid cataloging authorization is necessary for access to the production database; OCLC will provide access to the test server upon request.
OCLC WebExpress service, which provides an easy-to-use integrated gateway to library resources, was introduced in the second quarter of 2000. OCLC WebExpress consists of integration software, software updates, and access to a service center at OCLC providing documentation, training resources and a repository of database and server configurations for Z39.50 resources. WebExpress is designed as a low-cost, low-maintenance, easy-to-install gateway for smaller institutions.

Z39.50 based software produced at our site includes multi-site search servers with web interfaces and configurable OPAC targets interfacing SQL databases or text file based data repositories (e.g. a WAIS index). Comfortable graphical tools assist the configuration of these server modules. Both types of systems implement Z39.50 version 3. The OPAC targets are available in C, C++ or Java. The Java implemented search servers allow connecting new data sources via Z39.50 but are open to other protocols as well (e.g. HTTP).
Beside the above mentioned S&R systems we have developed IMDAS http://www.imdas.at, a software supporting the workflows in museums with regard to the documentation and archiving of objects. This product already exists in a multilingual version (English and German) and is being continuously developed in close cooperation with museum experts. The software design allows adding new languages in a very comfortable way provided the necessary translations are available. The internet presentation of data recorded with IMDAS is possible by the means of our OPAC software. Customers can individually decide about the public view on their data.

The National Library is the maintenance agency for the Union Catalogue Profile, http://www.nla.gov.au/ucp/.
Through its participation in ZEDWEB - the Distributed Z39.50 / Web Gateway Service Project - the Library confirmed the ongoing need, at least in the Australian environment, for a central national union catalogue. During 1998/99 the Library committed resources to assist in the development of the Bath Profile to address some of the interoperability issues that had been identified through the ZEDWEB project.
In late 1999 the Library acquired the Blue Angel Technologies suite of products as the basis for a metadata repository and search system. This system is being used as the platform for redevelopment of Images 1/ and the Register of Australian Archives and Manuscripts to enable them as Z39.50 targets. The (PictureAustralia service ) launched in September 2000 also uses the Blue Angel Technologies platform to support a Dublin Core-based metadata index held at the National Library which links to pictorial images held on the web sites of participating cultural agencies around Australia.

Commercial Software name: ARCA Tool Kit
Supplied by Codices s.r.l. provides Search and Retrieval facilities
fully compliant with Z39.50-1995 V3. Originally developed within ARCA,
one of the largest research projects of the European Telematic Library
Program, has been recently re-engineered by Codices. It includes the
following modules:
representative: Giovanni Renzini
Platforms:
Built using YAZ toolkit from Indexdata, offering a useful set of search
and retrieval facilities, provides servers configuration with Explain
and multi server connection. It support SUTRS, GRS-1, several syntaxes
derived by MARC and allow to personalise the visualisation of records
in MARC format. A new version of the tool is under development.
ARCA Server is a software system which makes available the functionality
of an interfaced OPAC to a Z39.50 origin. The target is fully Z39.50
V3 compliant. The architecture consists of two modules: the Target
Core subsystem, which is independent from the interfaced OPAC, and
a set of API functions which are specific to each library system.
ARCA Server makes any OPAC to behave as a Z39.50 target by way of
the implementation of a small set of API functions that reflects the
basic operations of a generic OPAC. API functions are available for
several library management systems among them CDS-ISIS, WinISIS, SABINI,
EasyWeb. Services provided: Initialise, Explain, Search, Present,
DeleteResultSet, Scan, Access Control, and Close. ARCA Server supports
SUTRS, GRS.1 and any type of MARC derived formats. Porting on Windows
NT is underway. Integration with LIBERO and So.Se.Bi. Library Management
System is in progress.

Installation and configuration of a gateway that will allow access to NASA's EOSDIS Earth Observation (EO) holdings. Search and retrieval of collection and product level metadata will be done via the Catalog Interoperability Protocol (CIP) Version 2.4, a profile of Z39.50 Version 3.
We are also in the process of building prototypes that will implement parts of the WWW profile of the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) Catalog Services Specification. The WWW profile is based on CIP and the GEO profiles of Z39.50. The OGC prototype will provide catalog level services when included in OGC's Web Mapping Testbed (WMT) and NASA's Digital Earth prototype systems.

Providing a Z39.50 service to a consortium of several institutions. The server
consists of a Z39.50 protocol converter which acts as target for clients and
interacts with databases via db interface object handed to the target at
initialisation. The entire system is written in Modula3 and provides a database
system independent Z39.50 target.
The production system implements V3 and supports Init, Search, Present, Scan,
Explain (to some extent) and the ES functions persistent query, Periodic query
schedule and export specification. Have implemented servers for: experimental
Z39.50 access to the online catalog on the main-frame; Z39.50 access to a UNIX
based db system under development; Z39.50 access to Current Contents on the
mainframe.
To facilitate further development, an ASN.1 analyzer was written which now
succesfully parses the complete Z39.50 definitions. It generates modula-3 source
code which, together with a suite of object definitions allows the encoding and
decoding of all Z39.50 PDUs. The analyzer could be updated to generate other
language source if required.
In addition a Z39.50 to Web gateway has been implemented and is now installed
as a production service.

The Z Navigator is a Z39.50 version 3 (1995) client which runs under win3.1x,
win95. The client currently supports Search, Present, Scan, NamedResultSets. The
client features local sorts, saves, bookmarking and coping, navigation among
brief result sets, multiple target sessions and user configurable translation
of several record syntaxes such as GRS-1, SUTRS, USMARC, UKMARC, UNIMARC.
Session and connection data are saved and the interface is configurable to fit
the output of each individual target. The Z Navigator can be configured to
cooperate with Cactus Network Control Servers to facilitate and/or control user
access to a given set of Z39.50 targets.
A DDE server makes it possible to connect to other windows clients such as Excel
or to write 3rd party interfaces to Z39.50 in Visual languages which support
DDE client access.
The Z Navigator is based in part upon the YAZ toolkit by Index Data and was
co-financed by the CEC's DG XIII Libraries Programme. Beta copies will be
released in Dec. 1996

Currently developing a Catalog Interoperability Protocol (CIP) Prototype using Z39.50 Version 3
facilities to integrate multiple distributed data archive center
s into a Interoperability Catalogue System
(ICS). The CIP protocol extends the Z39.50 v3 Protocol and adds facilities needed for the EOSDIS
(Earth Observing System Data and Information System) Core System (ECS).
The goal is to seamlessly integrate a variety of CIP compliant data centers thus permitting the
Scientists and Researchers a single interface to access a wide variety of Earth Science Data
accumulated by a series of Satellites. The EOSDIS (NASA) project is expected to generate several
Peta-Bytes of Data over a decade of Earth Observation
at the rate of One Tera-Byte of raw data per Day.
Multiple CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites) agencies are active participants in the
development of the ICS system and the CIP protocol.

Global Patent Information project: large ASCII and raster image databases,
relational databases for both text and classified searches of US and
foreign patents. ASCII databases on mainframe and on a server including US
full text patents and 'first page' abstracts of Japanese and European
patents. In 1998 SQL relational databases will support classified search
by both US and European classification systems and will be used for
retrieval of Global Patent clipped and full images stored on the EMC2
system. The SQL (ORACLE) database will be a stand-alone system while
'AMICUS' (altered product of CGI Group) will be used primarily for
splitting and routing Z39.50 queries to SQL and text domains, using BRS as
a new text search engine. PTO had deployed two types of client in May
1997: (1) The WEB client was developed by CNIDR -- a standard Netscape
browser HTTP queries through MSI (a Z39.50 gateway, product of CAS) to the
mainframe. Messenger (product of CAS) is the mainframe text search engine.
(2) The DLL client, developed by CGI Group and modified to the PTO's
requirements, converts queries to the Z39.50 v3 protocol and targets both
MSI/ mainframe databases and AMICUS databases. The DLL client was
developed and deployed primarily for professional needs of the U.S.PTO
corps of examiners, the WEB client for casual users. Both clients use
Windows NT system for query and retrieval of clipped images.
