In the 2017-2018 season, Concerts from the Library of Congress uncovers the enduring power behind the music held in the Library’s collections. Opening with a one-two punch of Steve Reich’s unmistakable sound and La Santa Cecilia’s irresistible fusion of Latin styles, the season brings world-class performers of music that jumps off the page. A formidable string of quartets, bookended by the Minguet and Artemis, showcases classic works, past Library commissions, and music freshly composed. We will have outstanding vocal music by the Orlando Consort (highlighting one of the Library’s Renaissance treasures), the rich baritone of Gerald Finley, and rarely heard musical theater excerpts from Leonard Bernstein; legendary pianist McCoy Tyner and guitar virtuoso Julian Lage make Library debuts; and Louis Lortie and Hélène Mercier will present Rachmaninoff’s two-piano Symphonic Dances, the manuscript of which has been newly acquired by the Library. The journey is not limited to performance: artist conversations, scholarly lectures, our #Declassified talks, and even a fantasy film series delve deep into musical narratives—of performers, composers, and the Library’s resources. Join us for this season of discovery, all absolutely free of charge to everyone: we are your open source.

Baseball Exhibition
February 9 - December 31, 2017
Performing Arts Reading Room, James Madison Building.
This exhibition features baseball sheet music from the Library's collections. Most of these works are original copyright deposits and represent only a small fraction of the more than 400 published songs about baseball in the Music Division’s custody. They illustrate the remarkable congruence between the evolution of the sport from before the Civil War to the present, and the musical counterparts that have chronicled in song baseball’s greatest moments.
