FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Special information about the physical characteristics in a coded form. The information may represent the whole item or parts of an item such as accompanying material.

The physical characteristics are often related to information in other parts of the MARC record especially from field 300 (Physical Description) or one of the 5XX note fields.

Field has a generic tree structure, whereby codes given in 007/00 (Category of material) determine the data elements defined for subsequent character positions.

The data elements in field 007 are positionally defined and the number of character positions in field 007 depends upon the code contained in 007/00. Character position 00 contains a code that identifies the category of material. The fill character (|) is not allowed in this position. The fill character may be used in any other character position when the cataloging agency makes no attempt to code the position.

The categories of material for which field 007 is applicable in bibliographic records are presented in the following order in the field description: map, electronic resource, globe, tactile material, projected graphic, microform, nonprojected graphic, motion picture, kit, notated music, remote-sensing image, sound recording, text, videorecording, and unspecified.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING CONTENT DESIGNATORS

Each 007 tree structure for a particular category of material has a defined length and when it occurs, all positions must be present. Fields 007 for motion pictures and electronic resources are the only instances where the length of the field may vary. These each have a basic set of defined character positions and an extension set that may follow the basic set. For example, for motion pictures the basic set contains eight positions (007/00-07) should always be used. An institution may choose additionally to code position 007/08 through position 007/22. The coding of any character position in the extension set requires that the whole extension set contains a code of a fill character (|).

The list below contains the code values for 007/00 (Category of material) which define the subsequent position definition tree. Character position definition and scope for other positions in field 007 can be found in one of the sections for the categories of material (e.g., Sound recording) that follow this general section. Examples of field 007 are given only in the specific category of material sections.

CODES FOR 007/00

a - Map
Used for all cartographic materials except globes.
c - Electronic resource
Item involves a medium intended to be used or processed by a computer.
d - Globe
Item is a globe which is defined as the model of a celestial body, usually the earth or the celestial sphere, depicted on the surface of a sphere.
f - Tactile material
Item is tactile material which is defined as material intended to be read or interpreted by touch.
g - Projected graphic
Item is projected graphic material which is defined as a two-dimensional representation intended to be projected without motion by means of an optical device, for example, a filmstrip, slide, or transparency (includes x-rays).
h - Microform
Item is a microform. Microform is a generic term for any medium, transparent or opaque, bearing microimages. A microimage is a unit (e.g., a page) of textual, graphic, or computer-generated material that is contained on aperture cards, microfiche, microfilm, micro-opaques, or other microformats and that is too small to be read without magnification. Microforms may be reproductions of existing textual or graphic materials or they may be original publications.
k - Nonprojected graphic
Item is nonprojected graphic material. This is defined generally, as a two-dimensional pictorial representation whether opaque (e.g., print, photoprint, drawing) or transparent, but not intended to be projected for viewing (e.g., a photographic negative).
m - Motion picture
Item is a motion picture, which is defined as a series of still pictures on film, with or without sound, designed to be projected in rapid succession to produce the optical effect of motion.
o - Kit
Item is a kit, which is defined as a mixture of various components issued as a unit and intended primarily for instructional purposes. No one component is identifiable as the predominant component of the item. Examples are packages of assorted materials, such as a set of K-12 social studies curriculum material (books, workbooks, guides, activities, etc.), or packages of educational test materials (tests, answer sheets, scoring guides, score charts, interpretative manuals, etc.).
q - Notated music
Item is notated music, which is defined as graphic, non-realized representations of musical works, both in printed and digitized manifestations. It includes musical scores and/or parts, diagrammatic representations, tablature, instructions for chance compositions, pictures or paintings intended as musical compositions, square note notation, klavirskribo, chant notation, neumes, braille, and other ways of representing the four components of musical sound: pitch, duration, timbre, and loudness. Notated music is often the means for communicating to the performer(s) how the musical work notated therein is to be realized in sound.
r - Remote-sensing image
Item is a remote-sensing image or remote-sensing map. This is an image produced by a recording device that is not in physical or intimate contact with the object under study.
s - Sound recording
A storage medium containing recorded sound or a representation of a musical composition from which sound can be mechanically reproduced, such as a piano roll.
t - Text
Item is text, defined as printed or manuscript language material that is accessible to the naked eye (e.g., a book, a pamphlet, a broadside).
v - Videorecording
Item is a videorecording, defined as a recording on which visual images, usually in motion and accompanied by sound, have been registered. It is designed for playback by means of a television set.
z - Unspecified
Item is not identified by one of the other 007 code values or that its multiple physical forms are not being specifically denoted.

INPUT CONVENTIONS

Repeatability - Field 007 is repeatable to allow for coding different physical formats covered by the same cataloging record. For example, a record which describes a videocassette available in U-matic, Beta, and VHS formats will have three separate 007 fields. In this case, each 007 field may have the same categorical structure but different values that describe the different formats of the material. When the item being cataloged has components that are in different material categories (e.g., a kit containing a map, a cassette, and a filmstrip), then the field is repeated for the different 007 structures needed for the different categories of material. If an institution chooses not to input separate 007 fields, codes "zm" in 007/00-01 can be used. When more than one value of a given character position is applicable, additional 007 field(s) may be created to code the variant information.

CONTENT DESIGNATOR HISTORY

In 1981, the present generalized approach to coding physical description characteristics in field 007 was defined. Prior to that time, this field was defined only in the visual materials and music specifications and contained a variable number of fixed-length entries. The field was not repeatable, but the set of 6 (visual materials) or 11 (music) character positions could be repeated within the field. When the field was restructured and expanded to other USMARC specifications, the field was made repeatable and the set of character positions defined for each category of material was made nonrepeatable. The visual materials 007 covered motion pictures (1970-1980) and projected graphics and videorecordings (1976-1980); each category currently has a separate 007 defined. The music 007 covered only sound recordings.

The following table maps the earlier structures onto the current 007 fields:

In 1981, newly structured 007 fields for projected graphics (00, code g), motion pictures (00, code m), videorecordings (00, code v), and sound recordings (00, code s) became valid; a 007 for microforms (00, code h) was defined.

In 1982, 007 fields for maps (00, code a) and globes (00, code d) were defined for map and kit material; the 007 field for sound recordings (00, code s) was extended to kits.

In 1983, 007 field for nonprojected graphics (00, code k) was defined for two-dimensional nonprojected graphic material.

In 1985, the 007 field for motion pictures (00, code m) was extended to character positions 08-22 for archival characteristics when field 009 (Physical Description Fixed Field for Archival Collection) was made obsolete.

In 1990, 007 fields for text (00, code t) and for unspecified material (00, code z) were defined for all forms of material.

In 2002, the Computer file 007 field was renamed to “Electronic resource.”

In 2016, 007 field for Sound recording (00, code s) was redescribed.
