REVISED:
NAME: Defining a Control Subfield $7 in the Series Added Entry Fields, for the Type and the Bibliographic Level of the Related Bibliographic Record
SOURCE: German National Library
SUMMARY: This paper discusses a way to designate the type and bibliographic level of a series in a record that describes a part of that series.
KEYWORDS: Series (BD); Series added entry (BD); 800-830 (BD); Type of record (BD); Bibliographic level (BD); Control subfield $7 (BD)
RELATED: 2007-06/2; 2007-06/5; 2010-02
STATUS/COMMENTS:
12/20/12 - Made available to the MARC community for discussion.
01/26/13 – Results of MARC Advisory Committee discussion: The Committee was positive about the need and the approach taken. Subfield $7 is to be defined in fields 800-830 in similar structure as the 76X-78X fields. As $7 is defined differently in field 533, technically there is no need to have exactly the same structure: Only position /2 Type of record and /3 Bibliographic level are to be proposed as 800-830 $7 positions /0 and /1, respectively. A proposal will be prepared and presented to the Committee for ALA Annual 2013.
In German speaking countries it is usually the case that a series is described in an equivalent to a MARC Bibliographic Record. The MARC Authority format is not used for series.
In addition, whenever a series has parts with separate textual, numerical or chronological designations, the parts are described using a field 490, and they are controlled using one of the fields 800, 810, 811, or 830.
A series can have different bibliographic levels: It can be a multipart monograph, i.e. "intended to be completed, in a finite number of separate parts" (MARC Bibliographic Leader position 07 "m"); or it can be a continuing resource, or monographic series, i.e. a "bibliographic item issued in successive parts bearing numerical or chronological designations and intended to be continued indefinitely" (MARC Bibliographic Leader position 07 "s").
For a description of a part of a series, and a lossless conversion to and from MARC, there is a need to distinguish in the MARC record for the part whether the field in the group of 800-830 controls a multipart monograph, or a continuing resource/monographic series.
At the moment there is no MARC element containing this kind of information.
In the Linking Entry Fields 76X-78X, there is a subfield $7 containing coded information that corresponds to coded information in the record that the field links to. This structure may serve as a model for a new subfield to be defined similar to subfield $7 in 800-830.
In the Bibliographic format, subfield $7 is defined in the Linking Entry Fields 76X-78X as follows:
$7 - Control subfield
Up to four character positions (designated 0, 1, etc.) that indicate special characteristics of the linked entry. Because the definitions of the codes in subfield $7 are dependent on the character position in which they occur, the coding of any character position mandates that each preceding character position contains a code or the fill character (|); succeeding character positions need not be used. For example, if position 0 and 1 are not applicable but position 2 is applicable, then position 0 and 1 contain code n (Not applicable) or a fill character.
/0 - Type of main entry heading
Code indicating either the type of name contained in subfield $a or the uniform title in subfield $t. The codes correspond to the 1XX tag in the record for the related item: 100 (Main Entry-Personal Name), 110 (Main Entry-Corporate Name), 111 (Main Entry-Meeting Name), and 130 (Main Entry-Uniform Title). Code n is used when no other codes apply.
p Personal name c Corporate name m Meeting name u Uniform title n Not applicable /1 - Form of name
Code indicating the form of the name contained in subfield $a. The code corresponds to the value of the first indicator in the 1XX field in the record for the related item, and must thus be interpreted in conjunction with the value in position 0.If position 0 = p (Personal name), position 1 contains one of the following codes:
0 Forename 1 Surname 3 Family name If position 0 = c (Corporate name) or m (Meeting name), position 1 contains one of the following codes:
0 Inverted name 1 Jurisdiction name 2 Name in direct order If position 0 = u (Uniform title) or n (Not applicable), position 1 contains:
n Not applicable /2 - Type of record
Code indicating the type of record for the related item. The code corresponds to the code in Leader/06 (Type of record) in the record for the related item.
a Language material c Notated music d Manuscript notated music e Cartographic material f Manuscript cartographic material g Projected medium i Nonmusical sound recording j Musical sound recording k Two-dimensional nonprojectable graphic m Computer file o Kit p Mixed material r Three-dimensional artifact or naturally occurring object t Manuscript language material /3 - Bibliographic level from Leader/07 of related record
Code indicating the bibliographic level of the related item. The code corresponds to that in Leader/07 in the record for the related item.
a Monographic component part b Serial component part c Collection d Subunit i Integrating resource m Monograph/item s Serial

As opposed to 76X-78X $7, the information about the type of main entry heading, and about the form of name is already expressed by the field number, and by the first indicator of 800-830.
A possible solution is to define $7 in fields 800-830 exactly as it is defined in 76X-78X. The subfield $7 field would appear like this: e.g. $7||am or $7||as. An alternative solution is to define control subfield $7 in fields 800-830 with only two positions, position /0 for the Type of the related record, and position /1 for the Bibliographic level from Leader/07 of the related record.
There is only one more field in the MARC Bibliographic Format with a control subfield $7 defined: field 533 Reproduction note, where $7 contains positions and their codes corresponding to a selection of positions and their codes from the 008 field of the reproduction record.
Example of a monographic series (“DIN-Taschenbuch”) which contains a multivolume monograph (“Fasteners”) which contains a part called “Basic Standards”:

4.1. Does it seem reasonable to define a control subfield $7 in the Series Added Entry Fields 800/810/811/830 for the need described?
4.2. Should the structure of $7 as defined in the Linking Entry Fields 76X-78X be taken into account?
4.3 a) Should all 4 positions be taken over from 76X-78X $7 to 800-830, accepting redundancies between field numbers in 800-830 and position /0, and indicators in 800-811 and position /1, respectively?
4.3. b) Or should only position /2 and /3 be taken over, accepting a difference in the structure of 76X-78X $7 and 800-830 $7?
4.4. Can 008/12 (Type of series) in the Authority format be used as an alternative solution to what is being proposed in this paper?
