Background

This document contains an archive of the DTD, conversion programs and background information for the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) version of MARC 21 that was developed starting in 1995. In 2001, the SGML DTDs were fully converted to XML DTDs and new conversion pathways established. Accordingly, these DTDs were superseded and are no longer updated. The information formerly accessible from the main MARC 21 site is archived here for reference by former users.

Please send any questions or comments to: ndmso@loc.gov.

If an error occurs when accessing the DTD files, please right click on the link and save the DTD file to your hard disk.

Character Conversion

The following SGML file provides a map useful for special character conversion from MARC to SGML character entities or to Unicode character entities. Note that you do not need to download this file if you are using the Perl conversion utilities listed above. This file is already built in to those programs. The same data is also available as a Microsoft Access 97 database and as a Microsoft Access 2000 database.
