MARC in XML

MARCXML Schema

The Network Development and MARC Standards Office has developed a framework for working with MARC data in a XML environment. This framework is intended to be flexible and extensible to allow users to work with MARC data in ways specific to their needs. The framework contains many components such as schemas, stylesheets, and software tools developed and maintained by the Library of Congress. Conversion utilities between MARC (ISO 2709) and MARCXML are also available.

MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema)

The Network Development and MARC Standards Office, with interested experts, has developed a schema for a bibliographic element set that may be used for a variety of purposes, and particularly for library applications. As an XML schema, the "Metadata Object Description Schema" (MODS) is intended to carry selected data from existing MARC 21 records as well as to enable the creation of original resource description records. Conversion utilities between MARC (ISO 2709) and MODS (via MARCXML) are available.

MADS (Metadata Authority Description Schema) draft

The Library of Congress' Network Development and MARC Standards Office has developed the Metadata Authority Description Schema (MADS), an XML schema for an authority element set that may be used to provide metadata about agents (people, organizations), events, and terms (topics, geographics, genres, etc.). MADS was created to serve as a companion to the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS). The MADS draft schema is now available for broad review to inform its completion. Based on input from prospective users, the schema will be revised and made available for experimentation. After the review period, changes will be made to MODS to make the two schemas more consistent.

MARC XML DTD (Document Type Definition)

In the mid 1990's, the Network Development and MARC Standards Office developed two SGML DTDs that supported the conversion of cataloging data from the MARC data structure to SGML (and back) without loss of data. As technology developed and changed, the SGML DTDs have been converted to XML DTDs. These XML DTDs differs from the MARCXML schema by specifying each MARC data element as an XML element. This approach results in very large DTDs.
